ESTG students already have an award-winning app of their CV

A group of students created, in just four days, an app that will allow users of 580 national beaches to indicate the levels of occupation of the beach

With the pandemic, one must be very careful. This was the motto for four young, who developed an innovative application.

Bruno Dylan, Jorge Correia and Nuno Castro, now students of the Degree in Computer Engineering at the Superior School of Technology and Management (ESTG) of the Polytechnic of Porto, and Diogo Resende developed an application on the level of occupation of beaches in Portugal.

At the time they developed the application, they were still students of the 12th grade of the technical-professional programming course at the Serafim Leite Secondary School, in São João da Madeira.

All stages of designing the app were done remotely, since the student were on a online classes regime. The project was completed in just four days, as a result of the "enthusiasm of the kids and an incredible dedication, which reached 14 hours a day", explains the project coordinator, Fátima Pais.

Named SandSpace, the app won the People's Choice Award from the international Apps for Good initiative, promoted by the London platform with the same name, who is dedicated to teaching technologies and regularly selects student projects on scientific computing developed for smartphones or tablets.

On the 27th of November, they were placed in 2nd place in the National Youth Scientist Contest of the Youth Foundation, being also selected to represent Portugal in the USA in the INTEL / ISEF contest.
