P.PORTO researcher among the most cited in the world

José Tenreiro Machado of ISEP, Engineering School of the Polytechnic of Porto, maintains his place as one of the most cited Portuguese researchers

Some of the most relevant scientific research is carried out at the Polytechnic of Porto, as demonstrated by the solid presence of researcher José Tenreiro of the Higher Institute of Engineering of Porto | ISEP, engineering school of P.PORTO, in the list of the most cited scientists worldwide.

The confirmation is given by the list Highly Cited Researchers 2020, from the North American Clarivate Analytics, which includes more than 6000 researchers, from 60 countries and regions, in 21 research areas, among them 10 are Portuguese. According to this list, José Tenreiro Machado's articles were cited 12,397 times in the last ten years, with each article cited an average of 326.2 times.

The most cited article (726 times) was the Recent history of fractional calculus published in Communications in Nonlinear Science and Numerical Simulation ( March, 2011).  The presence of the researcher in this list is of great relevance, as it constitutes an acknowledgment of the quality and international impact of science carried out at the Polytechnic of Porto.

With a degree in Electrical Engineering and a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, Tenreiro Machado has an enviable professional and academic curriculum. The researcher has dedicated part of his life to ISEP for a long time and currently holds the position of Principal Coordinating Professor in the Department of Electrotechnical Engineering.

Highly Cited Researchers is done annually by Clarivate Analytics, which acquired the Web of Science and Thomson Reuters bases, and focuses only on the most cited articles, which represents 1% of what is published in the world, being a strong indicator of the impact on science globally.

The list recognizes researchers who demonstrate expressive authority in one or more scientific categories, determined by publishing the articles most cited by their peers during the past decade. A “highly cited” researcher is much more than “the author of a highly cited article.” It represents an exceptional ancestry in a given scientific field.

In 2018, the Cross Field category was added, which identifies researchers with significant authority in various fields during a given period (2008-2018). José Tenreiro Machado falls into this interdisciplinary category.

The list of Clarivate - a company specialized in scientific information management - includes 26 Nobel prizes. USA, China, United Kingdom and Germany are the countries most represented in this year's ranking. The “Highly Cited Researchers” index has distinguished since 2001 the most influential scientists worldwide, based on the number of citations in the respective publications by their peers.
