The Politécnico do Porto is one of the contemplates with community support to improve energy efficiency.

There are 26 Central State buildings that will receive 54 million euros in European funds to reduce their energy bill.

Nine hospitals, two universities, four polytechnics, among which the Polytechnic of Porto. In cause are 54.5 million euros that will be distributed by the 26 projects. The Politécnico do Porto has approved two projects (484,874.16€ and 228,823.31€, respectively) and the Hospital Center Lisbon North has the largest project (14.89 million euros).

The contracts were celebrated today, May 24, in the presence of Adalberto Campos Fernandes, Minister of Health, Manuel Caldeira Cabral, Minister of Economy, and João Pedro Matos Fernandes, Minister of Environment. The Egas Moniz Building, in the Santa Maria Hospital, was the space chosen to present the results of the first energy efficiency contest for state buildings. In the first phase, which ran from September 30 to December 28, 2016, we selected 26 projects promoted by 17 entities.

The objective of these intervention actions is to reduce the energy consumption of these buildings, guaranteeing an average annual saving of four million in the state energy bill, it’s being expected "an estimated reduction in the primary energy consumption in these buildings by more than 8,862 tons equivalent of oil", explains the statement with the presentation of the signing ceremony.

"In practical terms, these interventions will promote the installation of 23,610 m2 of more efficient windows and the installation of 133,600 m2 of thermal insulation in buildings (including asbestos replacement in 11 of the intervention buildings). Of 4,600 m2 of solar thermal panels that, together with other systems of energy production through renewable sources, will guarantee an installed capacity of 5.6 megawatts for self-consumption. Investments in more efficient lighting enable the reduction in 2,350 kilowatts of installed power ", Can be read in the same statement.
