Francisco Assis is the new president of the General Council of P.PORTO

The General Council of P.PORTO is composed by teachers, researchers, students and one staff member, as well as external personalities of recognized merit

The electoral process for the constitution of the General Council of Polytechnic of Porto is concluded. After the choice of the ten personalities from the civil society, co-opted last 26th April, Francisco Assis was elected yesterday, 10th May, president of the General Council, succeeding José Marques dos Santos.

Francisco José Pereira de Assis Miranda, current President of the Economic and Social Council, was a deputy in the Assembly of the Republic and in the European Parliament, was parliamentary leader of the Socialist Party and was Mayor of Amarante.

In addition to Francisco Assis, the list of external members co-opted to integrate this body is completed with another nine names: António Jorge Pacheco (artistic director of Casa da Música), Jorge Manuel Costa Campos (independent MP for the Left Bloc), Rui Manuel Lopes Nunes (founder and first president of the Health Regulatory Authority; Professor at the University of Porto), Isabel da Silva Pires de Lima (retired Professor at the University of Porto), José Fernandes Rodrigues (Professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Santarém), Ricardo Manuel das Neves Vieira (Professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria), José Luís Pereira Carneiro (Member of Parliament and Deputy Secretary-General of the Socialist Party), Baltazar Manuel Romão de Castro (retired Professor at the University of Porto) and Francisco Amorim de Carvalho Guerra (retired Professor at the University of Porto).

We remind you that the General Council of Politécnico do Porto is composed by representatives of teachers and researchers, students and administrative and technical workers. Determined by the system of proportional representation, by body and school, according to the d'Hondt method, the election for the elected members of the General Council took place on the 12th of April, and the results can be consulted here.

The General Council of the Polytechnic of Porto is composed of 35 members, 25 of whom are chosen by election, with the remaining ten being co-opted in an uninominal vote by the elected members.

We thank the strong involvement in this electoral process of all those to whom it was addressed, aiming at a participative electoral act, despite the strong constraints we experienced.
