5th Edition VISUM Summer School

Vision Understanding and Machine Intelligence (VISUM) is an event dedicated to artificial intelligence and computer vision.

The 5th edition of VISUM (ViSion Understanding and Machine Intelligence) Summer School runs from July 7 to 14 at Porto Design Factory.
Organized by INESC TEC, VISUM aims to gather Ph.D. candidatesPost-Doctoral scholars and researchers from academia and industry with research interests in computer vision and machine intelligence.

This edition is part of the FourEyes project (Intelligence, Interaction, Immersion and Innovation for Media Industries), which covers a broad spectrum of research developed at INESC TEC and aims to facilitate capture, creation, transformation, distribution and access to audiovisual content In a personalized, immersive and interactive way.

Paula Viana (INES TEC - ISEP) underlines the importance of the FourEyes project in the creation and development of new experiences and prototypes in the area of digital content. "We are talking about results that can be applied to broadcasters, radios, newspapers, museums, etc. The attempt is to create new immersive environments, more interactive, always thinking about the final consumer."

Ana Rebelo, from the organization committee and research of INESC TEC's Center for Telecommunications and Multimedia highlights the great adhesion of the event: "We have many participants from different nationalities and professors with international renown in the area of computer vision and artificial intelligence.

" This year's edition encompasses three topics: deep learning, human activity recognition and facial recognition analysis. "We are going to talk about the subject of terrorism linked to artificial intelligence and challenge participants to develop algorithms for this purpose," said the researcher.

Challenged students will seek to carry out projects related to these themes, learn about face detection and attempt to identify the individual through biometric analysis.

"We also think it is very important to have a business phase in the academic field," says Ana Rebelo, so there will be a session dedicated to industry such as Facebook, Disney Research, Nvidia, UTRC, MOG Technologies, Channel 180 and NONIUS.

At the end of the Summer School, the best project receives a prize of one thousand euros and three Nvidia cards
