Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering combines the potential of Engineering and Earth Sciences applied to the geotechnics of major engineering works, the sustainable management of natural resources, water and energy, the use of geomaterials and the protection of geoenvironmental risks. Issues related to the exploration, development, transformation and eco-responsible management of geo-resources, geotechnologies, the geo-environment and geo-materials are increasingly imperative in a circular economy and good technical-scientific, environmental and ethical practices.

Why choose this master's degree?

- It focuses on technological innovation in the extractive, construction, energy and environmental sectors, looking at solutions for major engineering projects;

- It has a solid theoretical-practical and experimental component, with field and laboratory work, case studies, seminars with specialists, and

research oriented towards an industrial, regional and international context;

- Allows the dissertation to be carried out in a business environment or reference institutions (internships or projects) and/or in R&D research centres.

Successful completion of the MSc programme (120 ECTS) is mandatory.

The following competencies and skills must be acquired:

A) General

i) Work independently on a variety of issues: gathering, analyzing and synthesizing information; developing a research attitude; developing ideas and arguments critically;

ii) Make effective use, in a variety of situations, of the ability to think and work creatively when problem-solving;

iii) Be critical, self-aware and able to apply critical capabilities to the work of others

iv) Develop a social, civic and ethical awareness and capacities for social intervention

v) Have effective communication and social skills, including the ability to work with others on joint projects or activities, as well as show skills of teamwork, negotiation and organization, and also respect for deadlines

present work in an accessible and consistent form;

vi) Have appropriate Information Technology (IT) skills

B) Specific

Be able to work independently and join team activities on engineering geosciences, geotechnics and geoenvironmental subjects:

- exploration, exploitation and management of geological, groundwater and geothermal resources;

- engineering geology and geotechnical mapping;

- ground engineering and earthworks in soil and rock masses;

- geological, geotechnical and geomechanical site investigations and geoengineering projects (e.g., blasting rock techniques, soil and rocks foundations, retention systems, tunnels and underground design, rock mechanics quarrying, harbour and coastal geotechnics);

- technical supervision of geotechnical laboratories (soil mechanics, rock mechanics and geomaterials);

- environmental geotechnics: natural hazards and geological risks, landscape recuperation design, decontamination ground and groundwater techniques, sanitary landfill design and land cover management/planning.
