Medical Computing and Instrumentation Engineering

BSc: 3 years (180 ECTS units)

The evolution of medicine has fostered a growing association with computing applications and instrumentation techniques. Whether for diagnosis or therapy, or for information management in health facilities, engineering and technological innovation have assumed an increasingly central role in contemporary medicine.

With the BSc in Medical Computing and Instrumentation Engineering, ISEP trains professionals that combine engineering skills (computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics and physics) with a sound knowledge in health sciences. Graduates are capable of developing and operating applications and medical equipment in order to support technological innovation in the health sector.

The course is a unique training option nationwide and is taught in a strong practical perspective since the first year.

Postgraduate Studies Graduate students can continue their specialization with the: MSc in Medical Computing and Instrumentation Engineering.

  • ISEP graduates develop technical, scientific and cultural skills, according to the sixth level of the National Qualifications Framework. The BSc ensures students are prepared to face the labour market and apply to the main professional bodies in Portugal: Ordem dos Engenheiros and OET. Career prospects Graduates in Medical Computing and Instrumentation Engineering can develop equipment for the medical field
  • ensure the management and maintenance of medical equipment
  • manage medical information in digital networks
  • develop health support software
  • develop biosensors and monitor biological signals
  • process medical imaging
  • among other activities. In recent years, graduates of ISEP began working in contract management (Efacec), hospital maintenance (Trofa Saúde), the development of customized engineering solutions (Sectra) as software engineers (HealthyRoad, ITSector, Glintt Healthcare Solutions, Alert-Life Sciences Computing), medical informatics specialists (Luz Saúde, Intelligent Life Solutions) and technical consultants (Efficientia).
