The School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto has a long history in training of professional translators and interpreters of Portuguese Sign Language (LGP), enhancing accessibility and social inclusion of the deaf community, thus fulfilling the goals established by the Law 89/99. The study program has contributed, since its creation, to the learning, use and diffusion of LGP, the elimination of communication barriers, promoting the qualification of professionals and expanding their entry into a thriving labor market.

  • With an important social role and increased development in the last decade, this course students will be able to exercise the profession, with skills and abilities to develop communication strategies between deaf and hearing people, acting as a translator interpreter of Portuguese Sign Language (LGP ) in public and private contexts, including: - Educational contexts (primary and secondary schools, higher education and professional education institutions).  - Social contexts (Assembly of the Republic, City Councils, public offices, police).  - Health contexts (health centers, hospitals, emergency services, clinics).  - Legal contexts (interrogations, testimonies, services, legal advice, courts, investigative bodies and public prosecutors).  - Religious contexts (ceremonies, meetings).  - Television context (debates, airtime rights, television news, advertising, entertainment, culinary, cultural, youth and children's programs).  - Scientific context (seminars, lectures, congresses, workshops, forums). - Artistic-cultural contexts (museums, theaters, guided tours)
  • - Business context (with deaf employees).  - Audiovisual context (audiovisual materials from and to sign language, subtitling).  - Associative context (support associations for the deaf and class associations).
