P.PORTO General Council take possession

The General Council of the Politécnico do Porto took over today, June 5.

Following the elections on April 4, the members elected to the 2017-2020 General Council took office today. Pursuant to article 9, paragraph 1, of the P.PORTO Statutes, the General Council includes eighteen representatives of professors and researchers, six representatives of students and one representative of non-teaching and non-research staff.

Manuela de Melo, President of the outgoing General Council, congratulated those present and stressed the strategic and fundamental importance of each one's role in the general interest of the institution.

The possession took place formally in the Acts Room of Central Services of the Politécnico do Porto, where each of the elected members read the term of office, where it solemnly affirms to fulfill the functions entrusted in respect "with the duties that occur from the Constitution and law ".

It should be recalled that the General Council is the highest collegiate body of the Politécnico do Port, having such important powers as the election of the President of P.PORTO, the approval of amendments to the Statutes, or the appointment of the Students Provider.

At the Politécnico do Porto, the General Council is made up of 25 members, with ten personalities from outside the institution co-opted by the elected members.

Soon after the inauguration, the President of the General Council summons the elected members to a meeting with the following single item on the agenda: "Co-optation of the External Personalities provided for in no. 1 of article 9 of the Statutes".

The external personalities are co-opted, in uninominal voting, by the elected members, by absolute majority, based on substantiated proposals subscribed by at least one-third of those members. After deliberation, it is incumbent upon the President to notify the said personalities, requesting the acceptance of the position.

On June 9, after acceptance of all co-opted personalities, they will take office at a General Council meeting.
