Considering the need to guarantee the quality of advice provided in the dispensing and use of medicines, and given the constant evolution of health care and existing therapeutic alternatives, it becomes necessary to deepen and update knowledge in the area of Pharmacotherapy.

The postgraduate course in Technological Innovation in Health: Pharmacotherapy will increase knowledge in the area of pharmacotherapy for the most relevant chronic diseases, other prevalent pathologies and special populations (pregnancy, pediatrics and geriatrics), allowing for improved care for patients.

Learning will involve characterizing the pathologies under study, identifying the therapeutic strategies available and understanding the respective therapeutic protocols for prevention and treatment. In addition to mandatory prescription drugs, it is also necessary to identify and characterize pathologies that can be treated with non-prescription drugs (MNSRM), evaluating the performance algorithms and selecting the MNSRM according to the pathology and/or symptoms presented.

The selection of the best therapeutic alternative should guarantee the most appropriate, safe and effective medicine, promoting the rational use of medicines. The advice given to the patient must be adequate and responsible, ensuring the correct use of medicines, in order to guarantee the intended effectiveness as well as prevent the occurrence of adverse drug reactions and/or medication errors.

The training will therefore allow optimizing professional practice in approaching the patient, describing and evaluating the pharmacotherapy instituted and outlining intervention strategies in different clinical contexts with a view to obtaining the best clinical results and effective therapeutic safety. It should also enable the detection of possible problems related to the medication administered. It is intended that the student integrates and applies the knowledge acquired in the resolution of clinical cases in the different pathologies addressed.

The postgraduate course in the area of Pharmacotherapy aims to enable the acquisition of skills necessary for counseling in Pharmacy, specifically in relation to pharmacological therapy, ensuring the safe and proper use of medicines in the prevention and treatment of different pathologies.

This training will be articulated with the Masters in Pharmacy, specialization in pharmacotherapy and pharmacoepidemiology, in operation at the Escola Superior de Saúde do P.Porto, with the possibility of crediting the Curricular Units carried out.
