An Environmental Health graduate is a qualified professional that applies the fundamental principles of Environmental Health to the diagnosis, evaluation, prevention and control of those environmental factors that can affect the physical, psychological and social well-being of the populations. This professional identifies and characterizes health risk factors with origin in the surrounding environment (air, food, water, wastes, soils, among others), prepares and develops actions with the purpose of preventing illnesses and promoting health, as well as activities of control and surveillance of systems, structures and actions that impact environment and health. These interventions are performed on different settings: habitational, recreational, educational, industrial and services.

The programme encompasses three major areas of knowledge: Public Health, Environment and Quality of Life, and Occupational Safety and Health.

The Environmental Health Degree course provides: Professional Certificate of Environmental Health Technician, issued by the Central Administration of the Health System (Law Decree No. 320/99, of 11 August); Access to the profession of Level VI Workplace Safety Technician (Law No. 42/2012, of 28 August), with a Professional Title issued by the Authority for Working Conditions.

  • An Environmental Health graduate works within multidisciplinary teams in hospitals, public or private healthcare centers and public services of regional administrations and local governments.
  • He/she can also work in enterprises/industries as: Responsible for the Quality and Environmental, Health and Safety Management Systems; Specialist consultant in the areas of Occupational Safety & Health, Environment and Food Safety; On-site Safety Coordinator; Specialist consultant in Geographical Information Systems. He/she can also occupy teaching and research positions in Higher Education Institutions or research laboratories in the field of Health and Environment.
