ATHENA

Advanced Technology Higher Education Network Alliance

It is time to rethink and shape the future of P.PORTO, in the European space of Higher Education.

We live in a unique period of transformation of Higher Education, through the European Universities initiative fostered by the European Commission and with the explicit support of the member-states.

The P.PORTO assumes a prominent position in this transformative movement by leading ATHENA, one of 44 alliances funded by the European Commission to lay the foundations of the new European higher education system.

ATHENA projects an ambitious vision towards an innovative, inspiring, inclusive and competitive higher education on a global scale, having applied for European funds to enable the project in its second phase with an estimated overall budget of 19M€, supported by the European Commission in 14.4M€.

The universities of the ATHENA alliance, coordinated by the Polytechnic of Porto, pursue, since 2020, the common goal of building a fully operational European University during the second phase of the project (2023-2027), aligning and incorporating substantial parts of their respective institutional strategies in the different axes of their mission: teaching, research, innovation and serving society.

We are creating an integrated European higher education campus, enabling mobility and automatic and flexible participation of the approximately 150,000 students and 10,000 staff members in this consortium in joint education and training, research and knowledge transfer activities.

The ATHENA - Advanced Technology Higher Education Network Alliance includes higher education institutions located in nine European countries, including, in addition to the Polytechnic of Porto: the University of Orléans (France), the Hellenic Mediterranean University (Greece), the University of Siegen (Germany), the University of Maribor (Slovenia), Niccolò Cusano University (Italy), Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (Lithuania), the University of Vigo (Spain) and Marie Curie Sklodowska University (Poland).
